Possible ideas

Hello everyone, this is just an old idea I found in my workbook that I come up with in the screenwriting class, what we did was we looked at headlines from the news and made premises on the basis of them. let us know what you think.

The main character is a hardworking & humorous tax official, who is in good health but is quite old.

During the Christmas period (I don't have a name for him but we'll just call him Colin for now) Colin has alot of work on his hands, when his ditzy secretary dumps a load more work on him, she jokes of him having a heart attack.

As the secretary walks off, Colin pretends to have a heart attack, the secretary laughs and leaves the room.

Throughout the day, the secretary makes various attempts to knock on his door, asking if he wants tea etc. She presumes he is busy and we see a junior employee look at the door with suspicion and intrigue.

On the second day at work we see the ditzy secretary call the junior employee to show what she has done to Colin. She has dressed him up as Santa Claus and says how funny it will be when he wakes up. The junior employee goes up to him and explains to the secretary that Colin is dead, but she still doesn't believe him, so he pulls Colin's fake teeth out and mimes with them "he's dead can you see?!?"

She finally understands, but explains that she has made the staff Christmas cards (with a photo of Colin dressed as Santa used) and already sent them out. All the staff come into Colin's office and panic..

That's as far as I got with that but it's just an idea to start with, anyone else with any ideas feel free to post them!

  1. hey everyone hope your all having a good summer so fare or whats left of it ha

so to theo im just not shor about this story line i think its abit to predictable but i do like the idea of the meain charactor beeing a tax official but why kill him off so soon? iff at all?

i think a good idea would be to like see more about what his job is like. iff he hates it it could be like him talking about how shit his job is then we like have a flash back or someone calling him gay or something iff you get me?

and like in his spare time he could like do something crazy or like be a part time drug dealer or something? x

  2. Hey guys. Sorry for the ridiculously late response, although we have spoken on Facebook etc.

Firstly, like Tom, I feel that this is a little too predictable and the comedy is almost too 'obvious'. I know that this may appeal to some audiences, but it doesn't work for me personally. Maybe when we meet as a group (which will be very soon!) we should discuss genres more specifically and decide what sort of film we want to produce - if the majority of the group would like to focus on "black comedy" like the idea suggested rather than other genres, I'm more than happy to go with that despite it not being an area of interest to me. However I think it's important to go with an idea that we are all passionate about, where possible.

The main thing about this particular idea (I know it's only a brief outline) that doesn't work for me is that I cannot find a point to it. I imagine that Colin is the protagonist, but he doesn't really do much. For me, a good drama script needs to see its protagonist aiming for and wanting something, and trying to get that something throughout the script. The plot points need to be clear - there needs to be an inciting incident for the protagonist at the beginning, we need to know what they want, we need to see them trying to get what they want for the most of the script, with all the ups and downs in between. I'm not sure that this idea could develop enough to fill this, however, it is a starting point and I'm sure other ideas will spiral off from this one.

    Thanks Theoooo!
